What I learned about scholarly research!

 






This past Friday we went to the library for our second visit to learn about scholarly research and started on some more research. This Friday we focused more on how to choose a research topic. We got an overview on how to choose one and then we did an activity on it. In the activity, we were handed three different random words and we had to develop a research topic about the three words. This activity helped a lot with learning how to develop research questions. It made you have to think a little bit out of the box and think about how these topics would go together then make a research topic.

When learning more about how to choose a research topic. We learned how some research topics will be broader than others and how some may have many pieces to them. The example we were shown was like a puzzle of how they all fit together. We learned the first step is to find your research topic.  Mine is “What negative effects mental and physical does social media bring? The second step is to identify key concepts that are only one to two words to make research easier. The four I used were social media, negative, mental, and physical from there we worked on finding synonyms of these words. 


Then from there, we started our research and I was able to get some productive work done on finding some more scholarly research for my paper. After the past two Fridays, I feel a lot better about writing my paper and confident in how to correctly find scholarly research. This next week I need to focus on finishing up my paper.

Challenges and Experiences with Microtheme

The first challenge I encountered with my micro-theme was finding a topic. It was difficult to find a topic that I am passionate about and was enjoyable to write about. Also, it took some lengthy brainstorming to find a topic that I thought would be interesting. I came to the conclusion to write about social media. Since others and I spend numerous hours on social media.  In the middle paragraph, I had to take some time to make sure I was utilizing words and qualified language to suggest ideas for the problem. Also, I struggled with the ending paragraph of my micro-theme and how to wrap up the ending. But I deliberated, and I was able to develop my closing paragraph. I had some difficulty with just some simple grammar issues throughout the paper but I was able to work those out. Recap on Card 101

  Looking back from the start Card 101 till now, I realized I gained a vast amount of knowledge through the semester. In the beginning, I struggled many times with having the right MLA format and citing my sources correctly in my essays. I steadily became more confident by looking at Purdue OWL for help on my formatting. Now after writing many essays throughout the semester it has become much easier and I have developed more positive writing habits. Also, I've worked on my writing process throughout the semester. I have llearned what it takes for me to become prepared and to write my best paper. I now give myself enough time to write a paper and not procrastinate. This gives me  more time to brainstorm ideas and map out a detailed plan for my paper. So if I do get a mental block when writing my paper,  I still have plenty of time to take a break and not feel rushed. College so far!

The first few weeks of college have started with some emotional ups and downs. I have been able to meet a lot of new people so far from my classes and on the golf team. I’ve been enjoying golf practices and going to the tournaments with the team. College golf is a lot different from golf in high school so it is going to take some time to get used to.   Also, I have been able to attend some fun sporting events and campus events. I've gone to some of the soccer and football games here on campus and North Central has put on some enjoyable events for us freshmen to meet new people. The Naperville downtown which has many shops and restaurants has been really enjoyable to explore. One of my favorite shops, Lululemon, is right downtown so it's nice it's close but could also be a problem.  Some challenges have been balancing my homework, classes, and golf team practice.
